ICE CASH IN AGAINST LEAGUE-LEADING GAMBLERS IN OT, 3-2.
The Indiana Ice rebounded in a big way as they defeat the USHL-leading Green Bay Gamblers 3-2 in overtime at the Resch Center.
Russian sniper Daniil Tarasov lofted the puck over Green Bay goaltender Ryan McKay 36 seconds into the extra stanza. Tarasov (G, A), Sean Kuraly (G, A) and Ryan Obuchowski (2A) all finished the night with two points while netminder Jon Gillies 24 of 26 shot by the host Gamblers.
The opening period ended with both teams twice meeting the twine. Goals by Kuraly and Kirill Lebedev sandwiched two Green Bay goals at the eight and five minute marks. Kuraly’s goal at 9:25 came off a rebounded shot by Ryan Obuchowski and Daniil Tarasov. Lebedev topped the Ice’s scoring with a wrister from the slot to tie the game with 1:28 left in the frame. Jose Delgadillo and Joseph Fiala earned an assist on the lamp-lighter. Sam Herr and Alex Broadhurst earned goals for the Gamblers.
After offensive dominated the first stanza, the defense took over for both teams, limiting the squads to a combined 13 shots on net. Netminder Jon Gillies was equal to all of Green Bay eight rockets during the period.
Both teams remained silent in the final period, despite bouts of pressure on both ends of the ice. Indy pressured McKay in an eight minute stretch midway through the third period, but couldn’t pierce the cage.
With the squads knotted up at 2-2 after 60 minutes, the trio of Tarasov, Kuraly and Obuchowski hooked up again when Tarasov lifted a shot over McKay a mere 36 ticks into the extra period for his sixth game-winning goal of the season. Kuraly and Obuchowski earned helpers on the goal.
The Ice face off with the reigning Clark Cup Champion Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday before bringing hockey back to the Circle City with a bang. Indy hosts the Chicago Steel in the 18th annual “Pack the House for Charity” night from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. A portion of the proceeds from individual and group ticket sales will be donated to charity.
