IZYK, ICE STUMP LUMBERJACKS 2-1, SPLIT PRESEASON SERIES AT PAN AM PLAZA

September 15, 2012

Dalton Izyk stopped 32 shots in net for the Indiana Ice, leading the Ice to a 2-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks Saturday evening at Pan Am Plaza.

Indy tightened up the defense, cut down the turnovers, and relied on Izyk to finish their preseason tourney with a win and loss.  Both the Chicago Steel and the Lumberjacks split their games in the three-game set.

Indiana took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after reversing a slow start into a dominating finish.  That lead stood up after a scoreless second and third period.

Zach Aman answered Muskegon’s only score when he buried a top-shelf shot at 8:43 of the opening stanza.  Robbie Baillargeon notched one of his two first-period assists on Aman’s goal and Joe Fiala also collaborated on the lamplighter.

Baillargeon started the second scoring sequence after stealing a puck to set up an Ian Janco goal.  Janco’s shot deflected off iron and into the visitor net with 6:22 remaining in the first period.  Victor Shakhvorostov was also credited with an assist.

The second period was scoreless but was punctuated with two fights.  Fiala dropped gloves with the Lumberjack’s William Messa late in the middle session and Aman followed with a tussle with Mike Preston just over a minute later.

Izyk and his defense fended off an 11-6 shot disparity in the third period to seal the victory.  Muskegon pulled their goaltender 1:38 before the final horn in lieu of another skater but could not even the score.

Regular season action starts on Friday, September 28 on the road against the Chicago Steel before hockey returns to the Circle City against the Omaha Lancers from Pan Am Plaza on Saturday, September 29.  The home opener is presented by BMO Harris.
