FORMER ICEMAN KRUG SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON

FORMER ICE DEFENSEMAN RECALLED FROM PROVIDENCE BRUINS

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Ice announced today that former defenseman Torey Krug has been called up to the Boston Bruins from the Providence Bruins, their AHL affiliate. He is the younger brother of current Indy assistant coach Adam Krug.

Krug recently wrapped up his first full season in professional hockey with Providence, finishing fourth among league defensemen in points (45) while leading team blueliners in points, goals (13) and assists (32). Through seven playoff games with the AHL Bruins, the Livonia, MI native has logged three assists. His efforts have earned him several honors throughout the season including being named Providence’s Defenseman of the Year and the AHL’s Rookie of the Month for February.

This marks the second time Krug has been called up to Boston this season, seeing action against rival Montreal Canadiens in late March. During the contest, he was credited with an assist on a second-period goal by Bruins’ forward Rich Peverley. Since signing with the Bruins’ organization as a free agent last April, Krug has three NHL games to his credit with a pair of assists.

Prior to his professional debut, Krug was a three-year member of the Michigan State Spartans’ hockey team, serving two seasons as captain. In his third year at MSU, he became the first defenseman in school history and the league’s first rearguard to win a share of the CCHA Scoring Title since the 1986-87 campaign. While at Michigan State, he was twice named to the First Team-All CCHA and was a Hobey Baker candidate in 2011-2012.

Before suiting up with the Spartans, Krug captained the Ice’s 2008-09 Clark Cup Championship team and earned USHL All-Rookie team honors. He finished his only USHL season leading team defensemen in points (47) and goals (10) while leading all league blueliners in assists (37).

This will be Krug’s first experience in NHL playoff action with Boston. He could take the ice as early as Thursday, May 16 when the fourth-seeded Bruins host the sixth-seeded New York Rangers in game one of the Eastern Conference Semifinals from TD Garden. The game will be broadcast at 7:30 pm ET on the NBC Sport Network.

The Indiana Ice is now taking deposits for 2013-2014 season ticket packages. Call the Ice office at 317-925-4423 or visit www.indianaice.com.

ICE CLOSE BOOK ON 2012-13 SEASON, FALL TO WATERLOO 5-2 FROM BANKERS LIFE

For the first time in their nine seasons in the United States Hockey League, the Indiana Ice did not punch a ticket into the Clark Cup Playoffs. The Ice closed the curtain on the 2012-2013 season with a 5-2 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Despite the disappointment, Indy took a calculated gamble early in the season to reload for the 2013-14 campaign by trading first and second line players for a stockpile of draft choices. The treasure trove of picks includes four first-round picks and six total selections in the opening two rounds of upcoming USHL Entry Draft.

Even though the season record fell short of Indiana expectations, they counted on fresh faces to stay respectable during the 2013 slate and many performed. Both Canon Pieper and Mitch Hults were goal scorers in the second period of the Sunday tilt at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and improved their game during the 64-game schedule.

“I do not look at this at as an individual effort, but a team effort,” commented Hults after earning points in six of his last ten starts. “Next year will be a lot better. I learned alot in this half season of play and will know the system better when we start next year.”

Waterloo took control of the final game by scoring three unanswered goals in the second period. The trio of scores came just after Pieper tied the game up at 1-1 with a short-handed goal at 4:43 of the frame. Matt Krug left him a drop pass and Pieper found an opening in the five-hole of Black Hawk netminder Eamon McAdam.

“We wanted to stay positive and stick with coach’s (Jeff Brown) plan,” Pieper stated. “It is going to pay off next year.”

Just when the game was becoming out of reach for the hosts, Hults narrowed the deficit to 4-2 at 17:02 of the middle stanza. Mikhail Plotnikov won a corner battle and fed Hults in front of the visitor net. Patrick Newell also earned an assist on the goal.

Waterloo used the victory to earn the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They scored the only goal of the third period on an empty net goal with 58 seconds remaining.

Just like Saturday evening, the Hawks scored on their first shot of the game to carry a 1-0 lead into the second period.

ICE KEEP BATTLING TO THE FINISH, FALL 3-2 VS. WATERLOO IN SHOOTOUT

They could have mailed this one in---and they did not. The Indiana Ice, eliminated from post-season contention and skating against the Waterloo Black Hawks in their second to last game of the season, pushed Waterloo into overtime and an eventual seven-round shootout.

The Black Hawks won their seventh straight by scoring three times in the shootout besting Indy 3-2.

Only Patrick Newell and Mikhail Plotnikov were able to score in the one-on-one against the opposing goaltender.

After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth minute of the second period, Indiana drew even at 2-all heading to the third period. The Ice converted on two consecutive power play opportunities to cancel out a two-goal deficit.

Defenseman Vince Pedrie found net from the blue line at 6:23 of the middle frame to cut the visitor lead in half with an extra skater. Jake Cass and Tyler Pham earned assists in the scoring sequence.

“We went into the second period with the mindset of putting the puck on their net and keeping the play in their zone,” commented Pedrie. “We were playing to win and nothing but earning two points was acceptable.”

Plotnikov notched his 20th goal of the season while Indy was skating with their next man advantage. His score was set up by a feed from Mitch Hults from the faceoff circle with just over seven minutes remaining in the second stanza. Hults picked up the puck from Patrick Newell’s face off win and fed the Russian forward stationed at the Black Hawk net.

The visitor’s Taylor Cammarata scored the lone Waterloo goal of the second period at 5:25.

Indiana had a distinct edge everywhere but on the scoreboard after the first period. The hosts limited the Black Hawks to three shots on goal while launching eight shots on visitor goalie Cal Petersen.

By virtue of Waterloo’s Mike Huntebrinker scoring 1:50 after opening faceoff, the game’s first shot of the contest put the visitors up 1-0 at the first intermission.

Anderson Snair played well enough to earn a win in net for the hosts. The Indiana netminder stopped 27 shots in regulation and overtime.

The season concluded Sunday at 3:05 when the two teams face a rematch at Banks Life Fieldhouse.

ICE FALL IN YOUNGSTOWN SERIES CLOSE, 5-2.

Momentum from a steady first period soon shifted in favor of the Youngstown Phantoms as they rattled off four unanswered goals in the second and third periods to defeat the Indiana Ice 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Tyler Pham and Patrick Newell found the back of the net for Indy while Laythe Jadallah recorded his first USHL point with an assist on Pham’s first-period goal.

Youngstown’s first lead of the contest lasted only 30 seconds as Pham answered Austin Cangelosi’s goal with 46 seconds in the frame. Jadallah took a pass from Lukas Laub and then fed the University of Denver commit from the faceoff circle for his eighth goal of the season.

“Fancy footwork” from Newell gave the Ice their first and only lead of the contest at 2-1 midway through the second period. After shutting down the league’s most dangerous shorthanded unit, Blake Siebenaler lofted a pass from the blueline to the faceoff circle. Vince Pedrie’s shot on net went wide where the puck met up with Newell’s skate and deflected into the net for his third goal of the season.

Indy looked to have momentum as they shut down Youngstown’s power play unit for a majority of the man advantage until Kyle Connor dug the puck out of a corner battle and dished it to Tommy Davis, whose laser from the blueline beat Anderson Snair stick-side to knot the score at 2-2.

John Padulo put the Phantoms ahead for good with a power play goal late in the second and Youngstown did all the scoring in the third period as Sam Anas and Cangelosi connected for the victors.

Hockey action returns to Bankers Life Fieldhouse next Saturday and Sunday as the Ice host the Waterloo Black Hawks in a weekend double-header to close the book on the 2012-2013 campaign. Saturday’s contest is set to begin at 7:05 pm while Sunday’s game is a 3:05 pm faceoff.

ICE EDGE TEAM USA IN CLOSE SHAVE, 3-2

Three goals is what it took for the Indiana Ice to earn a 3-2 victory over Team USA Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The three scoring shots did not travel a combined distance of 20 feet.

Mitch Hults scored the game-winner one minute before the final horn on a tap-in of a Joshua Jacobs’ wrist-shot. When Jacob’s shot leaked behind U-17 goalie Hunter Miska and rode the goal-line before Hults charged the loose puck.

“Coach Jeff Brown has stressed putting the puck on net and crashing it,” commented Hults. “The puck was loose and kicked behind the goalie and I crashed from the corner to get to it.”

Mikhail Plotnikov earned a two-point night with an assist on the play with 60 ticks remaining on the clock to go along with his first period goal.

The Ice could not make a pair of one-goal leads stand up through two periods. Despite skating without a shot on goal the first five minutes of the contest, Indy got on the board 11:34 after the opening puck drop.

Plotnikov benefited from a hard drive to the net by his line-mate Canon Pieper. Pieper’s point-blank shot in the crease created a rebound opportunity and the Russian deposited his 19th goal of the season. Defenseman Joe Fiala set the scoring play in motion when he fed Pieper.

Indiana limited Team USA to five shots on goal halfway through the contest, but the visitors tied it up at 1-1 after Nolan Steven received a drop pass in the Ice goal crease from Sonny Milano at 12:12 of the middle session.

Lukas Laub regained the host’s lead when he attacked the net from the left face-off circle. Miska could not fight off the shot attempt at 15:58 of the second period. Joseph Widmar and Jake Cass earned assists on the play.

The lead only stood up 33 seconds when Anders Bjork found net on the long rebound of Ryan Hitchcock’s shot on goal.

Anderson Snair earned the win in net stopping all but two of the visitor’s 20 shots.

Indy finished the season 4-0-0 against the U-17’s and faces a difficult matchup Sunday against the Youngstown Phantoms. The puck drops at 3:05

Indy finished the season 4-0-0 against the U-17’s and faces a difficult matchup Sunday against the Youngstown Phantoms. The puck drops at 3:05

FACILITY TO CLOSE FOR RENOVATIONS AND OPEN UNDER THE PAN AM PAVILION MONIKER

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League announced today that Pan Am Sports Incorporated will assume operations of the Pan Am Plaza rinks, following the recent departure of the Indiana World Skating Academy (IWSA) from the downtown establishment.

In conjunction with the announcement, Pan Am Sports Incorporated has signed an interim management agreement with the Kite Realty Group. Plans call for the Pan Am Pavilion to open for winter sports after renovations are completed this summer.

“The IWSA and Pam Robinson are vital to the figure skating community as demonstrated by their commitment to the sport and the many accomplishments achieved at the international level over the last 27 years,” said Justin Hart, senior VP and COO of the Indiana Ice. “The entire Indiana Ice organization wishes the IWSA and Pam Robinson much success in the future

The Pan Am Pavilion will be the official training facility of the Indiana Ice again next season and will welcome the Indiana Junior Ice U18 and U16 youth teams to the Pavilion alongside the USHL club next season. The facility will also contract out to a variety of other Ice user groups as the new management team takes shape over the summer.

“We hope to position the facility and team with USA Hockey to grow the game and continue to build on our USHL brand,” said Jason Burkman, VP of the Indiana Ice and GM of the Pan Am Pavilion. “We look forward to celebrating our tenth anniversary season next year at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and our current training facility at the Pan Am Pavilion. We also have several exciting announcements forthcoming for next year including September’s USHL Eastern Fall Classic and the Bigfoot Youth Hockey Showcase.”

Both rinks will be closed for renovations following the culmination of the Indiana Ice season.
